Photo Tutorial: Watercoloured backgrounds using Stampin’ Blocks

This is going to be a long post!!! lol

I’ve been having a ton of fun creating watercoloured backgrounds using ink colours, water and a stamping block. For these cards I used Block E, but of course you can recreate the technique with any size block to make different styled cards.

The fun part of this technique is that your background will turn out slightly different each time depending on how much ink you place on your block and how much water you spray.

CARD #1

Measurements

  • Rich Razzleberry: 5 1/2″ x 8 1/2″, scored at 4 1/4″
  • Shimmery White: 3 3/4″ x 5″
  • Whisper White: 3/4″ x 1 5/8″

  • I added highlighting to the flowers with the Chalk Marker, then used Wink of Stella to add some shimmer

  • Basic Black: 3″ x 4 1/4″ (Stitched Rectangle Die)

Tips: 

  • The great part about the new Wrapped in Texture Folders is that it gives you more options. You get 2 different patterns and each folder is 3-3/8″ x 6-1/4″ so you can choose to only emboss part of the card (left side, right side, top, bottom or middle) of your cardstock. To do the entire cardstock, I just match it up the best I can the second time I run it through my die-cut machine twice.
  • For the ribbon, I tied 3 together on the left hand side and then adhered the ends to the back of the cardstock.

Photo Tutorial

1. To create the background, I used 3 different purples (Highland Heather, Gorgeous Grape and Rich Razzleberry).

2. I started with the lightest colour at the top and pressed each colour into the block a few times to make the colours a bit darker.

 

3. You don’t have to cover the entire block, some white space actually looks good.

 4. Use the Stampin’ Spritzer to spray the block. I sprayed it about 4-5 times.
Tip: If you put too much water on it, your colours will overblend and it won’t stay a rectangle as much. If you don’t put enough water on it, you’ll have spots that are not blended at all.
5. Here is what my block looked like before I placed it on my cardstock. 6. When you place it on the cardstock, your colours will start to blend.
(I found this one a little dry at the top, but, it worked out nicely anyhow)

7. Your paper will be warped initially, you can let it air dry or use a heat tool to dry it quickly.

 

8. If you have a spot with too much water, you can gently remove a bit at a time with a tissue or paper towel.

9. If you want to add a bit more to your background, you can use the remaining colour from your block with a scrunched up piece of plastic wrap.

 

 10. Gently tap on to your wet cardstock or dry cardstock.
(If it’s still wet, you will find that it will blend a bit.)

11. You will get a different look each time!

 

 

 12. Now it’s time to pick out your stamps and make a card.
(For the background that was a bit dry at the top, I used one of my  stitched rectangular dies to cut it a bit before using.)

Be Jolly This Season

The chalkboard look with the Whisper White Craft Ink on this card is kind of fun. If you haven’t used the Whisper White pad before, it has a spongy consistency and the ink is thicker. It looks great on darker coloured cardstocks.

Dimensions

  • Old Olive: 5 1/2″ x 8 1/2″, scored at 4 1/4″
  • Whisper White: 4″ x 5 1/4″
  • Designer Paper: 1″ x 5 1/4″
  • Cherry Cobbler: 2 1/16″ x 3 7/8″ Die
  • Basic Black: 1 3/4″ x 3 3/8″ Die

Directions

  1. Add Whisper White cardstock in the Hammered Metal 3D Embossing Folder and run through a die-cut machine.
  2. Adhere strip of designer paper to the embossed cardstock and adhere both to the card.
  3. Stamp the greeting in Whisper White ink on a piece of Basic Black cardstock and use the 1 3/4″ x 3 3/8″ Die from the Stitched Nested Labels Dies to cut it out.
  4. Cut a piece of Cherry Cobbler cardstock using the 2 1/16″ x 3 7/8″ die from the Stitched Nested Labels Dies. Adhere both labels to the card.
  5. Stamp 2 poinsettias on Shimmery White cardstock using Memento Black ink. (Tip: it is best to make sure that the ink is completely dry before colouring)
  6. Colour using Stampin’ Blends, then cut out with Paper Snips. Add both the card using dimensionals.

One of a Kind

For this card, I used the Snowflake Splendor Suite for this card, but, decided to create my own kind of background paper using different coloured snowflakes.

Dimensions

  • Highland Heather: 5 1/2″ x 8 1/2″, scored at 4 1/4″
  • Balmy Blue: 3 1/4″ x 5 1/2″
  • Whisper White: 3″ x 5 1/2″  AND  1″ x 2 1/4″

Directions

  1. Stamp snowflakes randomly on the Whisper White cardstock using the 3 different colours of ink.
  2. Adhere Whisper White layer to the Balmy Blue layer then add the ribbon. Add both to the card using Seal Adhesive.
  3. Cut out the snowflake with the Balmy Blue Glimmer Paper using the die. Add to the card using dimensionals.
  4. Cut-out the small snowflake with Highland Heather cardstock, then add to the glimmer snowflake using a glue dot.
  5. Add the Blue Gem to the middle. These gems already have a glue dot on the back.
  6. Stamp greeting using the Highland Heather ink pad and add to card using Dimensionals.

Tutorial Thursday: Birds and Branches

TUTORIAL THURSDAY: Birds and Branches stamp set

Happy Thursday! On Thursdays, I’m starting to share a tutorial featuring 1 stamp set with 2-3 different samples! You can choose to see them on this post and/or print out the tutorials to keep for reference! 🙂

Idea #1

Measurements: 

  • Card Base: Misty Moonlight 5 ½” x 8 ½”, folded at 4 ¼
  • Cardstock #2: Calypso Coral 3 7/8” x 5 1/8”
  • Cardstock #3: Whisper White 3 ¾” x 5”
  • Designer Paper:  2” x 5”

Instructions:

    1. Using the Greenery Embossing Folder emboss both the left and the right side of the Whisper White layer. This is one of the thinner folders.  It will overlap in the center, but that will be covered.  It will look best if you try to make the design go straight across all the way.
    2. Add the patterned paper to the center of the Whisper White layer with Multipurpose Liquid Glue.
    3. Adhere the white layer and the Calypso Coral layer to the base of the card.
    4. Using the Birds & More dies cut two of the leaf stems from Just Jade card stock. Glue these so that one stem goes down towards the lower right corner.  You will probably need to trim.  Be careful or the stem will go into several parts.  The other stem will go toward the upper left.
    5. Stamp the nest on Whisper White card stock in Soft Suede ink and cut out with the Birds & More dies. Add with dimensionals.
    6. Stamp the 2 birds, also on Whisper White. First stamp the more detailed part with Misty Moonlight ink.  Then stamp over with the more solid stamp in Seaside Spray.  Cut out with the dies.
    7. Stamp the eggs in Seaside Spray. The stamp stamps 3 eggs.  The dies will cut out the three individual eggs at once.  I used only 2 of the eggs.
    8. Glue the birds so that they face each other. Add the eggs with glue dots.
    9. Stamp three flowers in Calypso Coral, cut out with dies and add with glue dots.
    10. The saying HELLO is from the Forever Fern stamp set. Stamp in Misty Moonlight, trim, and add with dimensionals.

Idea #2

Measurements: 

  • Card Base: Whisper White- 5 ½” x 8 ½” score on the long side at 4 ¼”
  • Cardstock #2:Whisper White- 2 7/8” x 2 7/8” and scrap for bird 2 ¼” x 1 ¼”
  • Cardstock #3:Seaside Spray- 5 ¼” x 4”
  • Designer Paper: In Good Taste (2 pieces in different patterns) 5 1/8” x 3 7/8” and 2 ¾” x 2 ¾”
  • Color Velveteen Paper in Cinnamon Cider: approx. 5” x 2”

Instructions:

  1. Fold card base on score line and adhere to the Seaside Spray cardstock layer to the front.
  2. Then, adhere the designer paper layer using Stampin’ SEAL.
  3. Stamp your sentiment in the upper portion of your smaller designer paper piece and attach it to the Whisper White square then to the card base using Stampin’ SEAL.
  4. Die-cut the branch with Cinnamon Cider Velveteen Paper. Add it to the card base using Mini Glue Dots.
  5. Stamp your bird using Seaside Spray ink then die cut with the Birds & More Dies.
  6. Attach your cute bird with a Stampin’ Dimensional.
  7. Cut a small piece of Crinkled Seam Binding Ribbon and colour it with your light Seaside Spray Stampin’ Blends on a piece of scrap paper. When it is dry tie a small bow and attach it to the card front with a Mini Glue Dot.
  8. Add a few Elegant Faceted Gems to your card and you are finished.

Idea #3

Measurements:

  • Just Jade: 5-1/2” x 8-1/2” scored at 4-1/4”, a separate piece of Just Jade for the inside die cut piece.
  • Very Vanilla: Front: 5-3/8” x 3-9/16”, 1” wide for the sentiment, Inside: 5-3/8” x 3-5/8” & 3-1/2” x 5-1/4”
  • Designer Paper: 5-1/4” x 3-7/16”

Instructions:

  1. Die-cut the front edge, cut a second one for the inside
  2. Die-cut the circular image from Crumb Cake Card Stock, then lay on the largest circle from the Layering Circles Dies and cut again. *This can be done either way by cutting the circle first, then the circle branch.
  3. Stamp the two birds using Memento ink onto Very Vanilla Card Stock and cut out with the dies. Colour their bellies with the Mango Melody Stampin’ Blends.
  4. Stamp the sentiment of your choice onto 1” wide Very Vanilla card stock (I used Celebrate Sunflowers)
  5. Assemble your card by adding the Very Vanilla front piece to the card front, then the Designer Paper. Using the adhesive of your choice, adhere the circular leafy image.
  6. Attach the two birds and the sentiment with dimensionals. Scatter some Champagne Rhinestones on the front
  7. INSIDE: attach the leafy strip that you cut out from Just Jade Card Stock on to the left side of the 5-1/4” x 3-1/2” piece of Very Vanilla, trim as need. Attach to the second piece of Very Vanilla Card Stock and then to the inside of your card. Attach it to the very left side so that it does not show from the front when your card is closed.

Holly, Jolly Everything

This card was super fun to make. I got the idea of the design from another designer and changed up the colours and stamp set and voila…a really cute card! 🙂

Dimensions

  • Pear Pizzazz: 5 1/2″ x 8 1/2″,  scored at 4 1/4″
  • Whisper White: 4″ x 5 1/4″ and 2 7/8″ stitched circle die
  • Designer Paper:  1″ x 5 1/2″

When you open the flap, there is more stamping underneath!

 

Directions

  1. Stamp the 2 gnomes on the front of the card using Pear Pizzazz ink. I did 2 different shades of ink by stamping on a scrap paper first for the girl-gnome.
  2. Use the Dark Granny Apple Green Blends Marker and tap against something hard to flick ink spots on the front of the card.
  3. Use the 2 7/8″ circle die from the Layering Circle Dies to cut out a circle from the front of the card.
  4. Cut out a 2 7/8″ circle using the Stitched Shapes Dies.
  5. Cut the end of the designer paper strip then take the strip of designer paper, put approx. 1″ on the back of the white cardstock and adhere. Fold the strip towards the front of the card.
  6. Place the Whisper White layer in card (no adhesive yet) and close the card so you can stamp the greeting through the window using the Real Red ink pad.
  7. Use Washi Tape (or painters tape) to cover the girl-gnome and only leave the tree at the top. Ink up stamp with Memento ink, remove the Washi Tape and stamp image through the circle. Colour the tree using Stampin’ Blends then adhere the Whisper White layer to the card.
  8. Stamp the gnome on Shimmery White cardstock using the Memento ink pad, then colour using Blends. Cut out using Paper Snips.
  9. Place gnome approx. where you will adhere it and Stamp “Christmas” to the left side of him in Real Red ink.
  10. Add gnome to the circle using dimensionals.
  11. Adhere the middle of the Whisper White circle to the strip of designer paper and pull ends through the card.
